Simmers Violin Shop is dedicated to the making of new instruments in modern and baroque setup. Although our workshop is usually occupied with repairs and restoration work, we think that it is important to make time for the crafting of new work. We make "new" instruments, as well as precise copies and free interpretations of old instruments. Our instruments are sought after by chamber and orchestral musicians around Australia and overseas.

We adhere to a traditional approach to instrument making. Our methods are based on those established by European makers in the 17th and 18th centuries. We enjoy using fine hand tools and believe that a good hand tool, well sharpened and used with skill, will always outperform a modern power tool in both speed and accuracy. We use the resins amber, mastic, copal and colophony to create pure oil varnishes that enhance the beauty of our instruments.

Most of the instruments we make are taken from, or influenced by, the great makers of the past. Some of our favourite models are those of Stradivari, Guarneri del Gesù, Andrea Guarneri, Jacob Stainer, Pietro Mantegazza, Carlo Guiseppe Testore and Andrea Amati.

Simmers Violin Shop has a large stock of well seasoned European maple and spruce. Most of this wood was sourced directly from the forest, cut to John Simmers own specification under his supervision, air dried and then shipped to Australia. Therefore we know the exact age of the wood and how it was seasoned.

We are happy to accept commissions for new instruments and also maintain a waiting list. If you have any queries regarding our new instruments please contact us.
